It's all about the fragile capsule and the dangerous environment outside. Red October, Crimson Tide, U-571, and Das Boot all have to deal with issues of water leaks, bad air, radiation, fire, and catastrophic structure failure, with very little chance of rescue, which I think is the same fear as astronaut thrillers.
