I noticed a lot of what you mentioned at the NIN show as well. There are great swaths of the show which are dedicated to the slower, contemplative stuff that he's been doing since the mid-aughts. He's definitely changed. I like it but it does not make for a great concert.
Oddly, the side band does a lot of the same type of music but it's varied enough with the potential to dial up the hard and crunchy enough to make the show A LOT of fun. Tell the people you were with not to miss a HtDA show.
The Light Show was fun however. And one of the back up singers - Lisa Fisher, is insanely talented. Check out, "20 Feet from Stardom" to get a good sense of how good and important she is.
I was disappointed in the encores as well. It ended on very quiet songs for the most part. We also didn't get Closer which was fine with me as I've heard it enough. But I was hoping for a few more obscure songs from the first 15 years.
I enjoyed it but as a long term fan I've been to better shows.
