ST Advice: Do you apply for an internal job promotion where you see the chances of getting it say, less than 20%?

All in all, it would be a great position.
But I know that someone else with my same current classification is also going to be applying for it, and he's 20 years older than me.
We'll both be applying + any external candidates.
I should anyways, right? For interviewing experience + showing the higher-ups that I want to move up and take on more responsibility?

it totally depends. if it's within your group, it would probably show initiative and drive. but beware bosses feeling betrayed

Yes. But also of consideration would be; are there further possibilities for promotion were you to get the position and/or would you be better off

as long as it doesn't entail any risk to your current position, heck yeah. Lets them know you want to move up, and if you don't get this one, the next
