First, one trip I took a few weeks ago to just north of Dallas involved 7 toll "Gantrys" which is what they call the sensors that you drive past that register a toll.
This means I had 14 charges for one day. Even at that, it would take about 3 years to rack up 14,000 charges, but I didn't go anywhere near the full length of the toll roads.
The astronomical bills come from the way they used to charge late fees. Instead of one charge of $25 for each month you were late paying the bill, they charged a $25 fee for every single toll that was overdue more than 30 days.
Before they changed the rules a couple of months ago, I could have ended up with a bill of over $350 for $11 in unpaid tolls.
