Apparently they are doing motion capture of B. Cumberbatch to use as Smaug. Gollum I get, but what would be the point of mo capturing a dragon? -- nm

I'm guessing we're to the point where motion capture is simply more feasible than getting animators to animate every frame -- nm

It does seem kind of self-indulgent somehow. On the other hand, if it rocks, I could see some actors being really good at it and making it worthwhile. -- (link)
