LIR Dawson - Sydney

I don't know Sydney that well, but here's my unsolicited advice.

If you want to see Australian animals, go to the Taronga Zoo, which is a short ferry ride away from the city. If you're really interested, they have VIP tours where you're guided around and get to pet kangaroos, koalas, have your photo taken with them, etc. There's also the smaller Sydney Wild Life World at Darling Harbour, which would probably take less time, but I've heard is not as good.

Also, the Botanical Gardens - right nesar the Opera House - is a good place to go and walk around. There are lots of native birds there - large parrots like cockatoos

The Australian equivalent of the hot dog is the meat pie. The famous place to get them is Harry's Cafe de Wheels in Woolloomoolloo, with mashed potatoes, mushy peas and gravy on top - but I would just go to a 7-11, get a Four n' Twenty Pie and have it with tomato sauce (don't call it ketchup).

My favourite Sydney fast food chain is Oporto - they do Portuguese chicken burgers. The Bondi double fillet is the one to get.

Find a good seafood restaurant, and in particular you should try bugs. They are a lobster-y type thing that looks even more pre-historic, but they are delicious and I don't think you'll find them outside Australia.

I'd also recommend having as much Malay/Singaporean/ Indonesian food as you can, because it's delicious and it's ubiquitous. Laksa - a spicy coconut soup with noodles, shrimp, tofu, etc is the thing to eat.

It's a shame you'll be there outside of the football and the rugby seasons, though not being there in cricket season is probably a lucky escape.

The museums and art galleries - like the Australia Museum, the Art Gallery of NSW and the Museum of are all good, but there's nothing outstanding that is a must-see. The things that will be most different/new are the exhibits on Aboriginal culture and history.

You're there for a good amount of time, and if you're not planning on visiting another city besides Sydney but want to see some scenic Australia, then a day trip out to Katoomba and the Blue Mountains is probably your best option. It's easy to get to by train.

Alternatively, the closest wine region is the Hunter Valley, about 2 hours north of Sydney.
