You're making the assumption that all of the cases are where they had barebones insurance.

In many cases that's simply not true (as the reporting has noted).
Like it or not, the ACA basically gutted the individual marketplace as it existed. For those for which that marketplace was working, you'd expect them to be angry when they are suddenly facing bills that are double (or more) than what they were paying before.
