My suggestion would be this:

I do see the other side of this to an extent. It out wedding day is supposed to be a happy day, a joyous occasion, and (most) people go through so much money, effort and time planning a kick-ass party. You don't want to have it potentially ruined by someone who could cause major issues, no matter who it is. (We went through this before our wedding with Wills mom...)

So my suggestion would to be to have an "oh shit" person; someone whose job it is to take care of the crap that arise, and keep it from the newly married couple. Someone to do crowd control. There were (minor) issues at our wedding that I didn't know about until after they were fixed.

That person might be in charge of, say, alerting the bar staff that the mother may be an issue so they can keep an eye on how much she's drinking, getting mom inside another room if she tries to pick a fight in the middle of the reception, etc.

What is the relationship with dad like? Could he be spoken to ahead of time? Or a sibling/aunt or uncle/etc?
