ytd is not what to look at. You need to look at your Annual Fee Disclosure (it's also called the 404(a)-5 disclosure).

There may be plan expenses you are not aware of.

It will also list the expense ratio for each investment as both a percentage and a dollar figure per $1000 invested.

These are the items you'll want to compare with similar investment types in an IRA brokerage account.
