Rupert might have been able to ingratiate himself into the tribe, because Survivor's been his life for 7-8 years. His social awkwardness is hidden by the fact that this is his thing.
Laura was so damn awkward and couldn't really get people to know or like her.
I agree that the returnees would have still had their streak...and he'd have hung around because of that.
