Having said that, I think Jamal Lewis is a great example of a player who was raised in a high crime area. Even though he became wildly famous and made tens of millions of dollars, he still saw the world a certain way. Leveraging his fame to work drug deals made sense to him.
Not all of the NFL is like that but a percentage of athletes were raised to that world. Not all of them leave it all behind. I used to talk about what a jackass Urban Meyer was while at Florida. A guy on the Falcons board had worked for that program, and I could tell he was absolutely terrified of some of the recruits Meyer brought in. The Pounceys would have been in that age range at the time.
If an enterprising punk like Incognito sees a natural fit with his thuggish tendencies, it becomes the doomsday scenario for the NFL. Bad people get attached to illicit big money opportunities.
