My Dear Ollie,
Oh how can I write again an tell you that having not heard anything of Arth we thought perhaps he was wounded, but dear I wrote to the War Office and have inquired but have received no reply. Vern had a letter from Joe Corry, Ern’s chum, and he says that he is heartbroken at the loss of the two dearest chums Arth and Ern, oh how terrible, but I suppose it must be true and Joe tells Vern not to tell us in case we have not heard from the War Office, but when we do he will write and tell us all about it, so it seems he was there with them. It seems at present too hard to bear doesn’t it, for both of them to be killed. Poor Bertha right away from all, it’s enough to kill her. Poor Dad does feel it. We thought something must have happened to them as we always hear so regular. Joe Corry is wounded slightly in the arm, poor boy will miss them, having always stuck together so.
Dear Joe too is seriously ill, but we must not tell him Dad says until he is a little better as in my letter last week he had been in the operating theatre again, as he was not pleasing them, so the news may put him back. Dear George went back last Friday with a sad heart, but I suppose we ought to look on the brightest side for their sakes. Cecil has his papers in, and has to be medically examined on the 16th Oct. Dad is putting in an appeal. I do so hope he will not have to go.
Dear words fail to come but I have wrote to Joe asking him to tell us all he knows, so will let you know later. Goodbye dear, may God bless and comfort you is the prayer of all. It is at such times as this when you feel you want to all be together. Poor Mum is best off, how this would have worried her, but they are far happier than us now, which is one comforting thought isn’t it. One thing we know they were quite ready to go, but it is the thought that they will never come back.
We received scores of letters saying how thankful we must be to know they have died a noble death, so must look more on their deeds and realize they suffered for others.
I do so hope all the children are keeping well dear, also yourself and Tom,
Love from
Grace.
