And democracy aside; growth in the region is effectively tied to China.

Australia weathered the GFC effectively by exporting iron ore to China. Growth in East Asia (and arguably a large chunk of the rest of the world) is irrevocably tied to providing China with what it needs. You can't extricate yourself from that, particularly with a developing economy struggling from a massive natural disaster. Any boycotts will be token, at best.
