I'm posting this NCAA football factoid to get it in the ST archive.
Here are the college coaches whose teams have averaged 6 yards per play or more in consecutive seasons (2011/2012). Ostensibly, these should be among the finest playcallers in college football as the game grows further skewed toward the offense. Total offense as a stat has become less important because of style of play. Some teams might aim for 60 plays while others target 85. Yards per attempt negates that difference.
Todd Monken Oklahoma State
Art Briles Baylor
Kliff Kingsbury Texas A&M / Houston
Lane Kiffin USC
Chip Kelly Oregon
Blake Anderson UNC / Southern Miss
Jedd Fisch Miami (FL)
Dana Holgorsen West Virginia
Paul Johnson Georgia Tech
Charlie Taaffe UCF
Noel Mazzone UCLA / Arizona State
Al Borges Michigan
This list is in order of average. Monkey and Briles are the only two coaches whose average is over 7 in 2011/2012. Strongbad's guy, Chad Morris, did not qualify in 2011 but did in 2012.
Note that Briles had an ultimate weapon in 2011 with RG3 but he still maintained explosion in 2012. Kiffin had two years of a top flight upperclassman with Matt Barkley.
Kliff Kingsbury was a record shattering college QB who won a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots (as a third stringer) who is only 33 years old. I think he may prove to be the quickest riser on this list.
