It's pretty unusual. The scariest tornado I experienced was in November when I lived in Southern Illinois (*really* Southern Illinois).

I was driving home and looking at the sky thinking, "That...looks wrong." It was truly multicolored, purple and green and orange. I got home and probably ten minutes later there was a crashing sound and the power went out. A mile away, a very posh neighborhood was leveled. I worked for State Farm at the time, so I was pretty much on call immediately. Seeing those homes basically down to their foundations shook me up.
