The magnetic film will *LITERALLY* slide off the tape. Stacking them vertically like books is the best way to preserve them.

But even then, their days are number. I've needed to have my engineer clean heads on VCRs repeatedly as I rip tapes. That magnetic film degrades like a bitch and then sticks to stuff.
