Eccleston would have been a bad fit. The levity that the two Doctors used was a nice counterbalance to the world weary nature of the War Doctor. Eccleston's portrayal was still fresh from that suffering so he hadn't found his laughter enough yet. The way that all of their arcs were tied together by John Hurt was a masterstroke.
