Eccleston didn't quit because he was unhappy. He was worried that he would get typecast as the Doctor and never work again. He is far too accomplished a thespian to risk that. What he could not have imagined is the way that Doctor Who would experience a resurgence over the past 5 years. Back then, he believed that the BBC had no confidence in the series, which has been acknowledged after the fact.
