People are furious. He's defending it by saying that it isn't collusion and that he is simply trying to position his team to improve it.

Yeah, it's a weak move, but how would you do anything about it? Instead of benching Brady, he could've signed Schaub or someone and started him in his place. Just put together a garbage lineup of guys that are technically 'playing' but not a threat for real points.
I don't see how you an do anything about it. Just luck of the schedule for who gets to face him.
