Even if this were not the silliest statement possible given the advantage Sony had heading into this generation...

it's still not true. IGN was mentioning just last week that both systems sold 80 million with the 360 slightly ahead. A quick glance at Wikipedia confirms this as the 360 had 80 million in sales as of mid-October. PS3 reached the same level in early November.
In North America, all that matters to me and everyone else in North America who isn't a Sony mark, it's not even close. The gap was 10 million as of 2011. Wiki hasn't updated since then.
