In the first couple weeks, the auctions were going for low 30k points, which could be accumulated for under $400

I know someone who built up that many points for free because he's a garbage collector and just picked out the bags and caps from recycling. He just got his console and game delivered yesterday.
I knew the math but didn't feel like doing the work to enter all the codes so I spent about $20 and just crossed my fingers hoping the sweepstakes entries would hit.
