There are five teams that have been playing Division 1 basketball since the NCAA Tournament began that have never made the tournament. Here's how they've started this season.
The team most likely to end their streak this season is St. Francis (NY). They are 5-3 on the season, but two of their losses are against currently ranked teams (Syracuse and Dayton, and they stuck with Syracuse into the last minute of the game). They also beat Miami (FL). Not a resume that will get an at large bid, but one that suggests they should be a contender for the Northeast Conference automatic bid.
Northwestern is the only major conference team on the list. They've started 4-5. Most of their losses have been against major conference teams but nothing that looks like they can challenge in the Big 10.
William & Mary is 4-4 with losses to Hampton and High Point. The Colonial Conference has lost it's most successful programs to other conferences, but still a run to the automatic bid would be a surprise.
The Citadel is 3-7 with two of those wins coming against non Division 1 opponents (one of the losses also came against a Division 2 team).
Army is 1-7 with their lone win against.... The Citadel.
