Sounds like she'd done it before and her ineptitude was just her stalling until she formulated a scheme to embezzle.

Trying to pin it on Trish, the lawsuit, everything is indicative of someone who knew exactly what they were doing. I wonder where all the money goes. Being a "nice person" is what gets her off the hook. Pressing charges is the only thing that will stop her, and the only way to protect yourself from a lawsuit if you tell the truth.
As an aside, ralph wiggum's case is different. This is not a lifelong criminal - at least not yet. I hope she can repay the money and go straight.
