Anything over a couple weeks, I would put it in the fridge. If you only drink it on special occasions just take it out that day to get to room temp.

Tawny ports in particular don't last long once opened if not kept cold. Vintage ports fair much better.

Also, try a madiera... Like a port, but sweeter.
