Spoiler question from last week's Lost episode (spoilers)

At the beginning of the show, when everyone was in the pendulum room, all of them were hell bent for leather to get out of town in 36 hours. Why? If they missed that window, why couldn't they just return to the pendulum room to figure out the timing of the next window?
