B is for bloated. Half of it is made up. So much so that I don't actually know how they're going to get back on track for the finale which I presume will be 3 hrs.
It's not a bad movie, better than the bad movie that came before it but it's just so craven.
The new character is fine but unnecessary. The new Legolas material is silly. It's just there for the geeks to howl about how cool he is while killing orces. There's one scene in particular that while fun goes on too long (one of many) and features item after item of him creatively dispatching ocres. Whereas in the first 3 movies it would be one cool little move, this was just excessive.
Also - I didn't know elves could get jowl-y. Legolas is getting a bit Alec Baldwin thick in the face.
Also, there's the signature PJACK excessive seen with insects. I don't necessarily have a problem with Spiders but after 10+ of a Spider Fight I was alternately bored and grossed out.
Smaug was an interesting character. He was a real character with conceit, bluster, arrogance - it was pretty impressive.
The dwarves are real characters this time facing danger and seemingly understanding that this is a dangerous quest.
Gandalf was given some interesting things to do and some fun scenes. There was a kid in our audience dressed as Gandalf from head to toe which was pretty neat.
All in all - it's clearly a bloated movie made to suck another billion out of the franchise. I get why they did it, it's the difference between 1 and 3 billion dollars. I'd probably do the same but since I didn't - I don't have to like it.
