we set a low spending cap, and he's been working days at another agency and nights and weekends at his own and i knew he hadn't got me anything yet. i found a wooden vase thing i loved on major sale yesterday and sent him a pic and said "i want this." he said "i am never going to get there to get it - sorry!" so i just bought it and told him to wrap it.
not exactly romantic and charming but it worked for this year. :)
