Deevs ... funny story inside about these very meatballs :)

one of my co-workers ALWAYS made them for our annual Christmas party - and they were my absolute FAVORITES - I would LOAD up my plate with those meatballs every year - and loudly exclaim how WONDERFUL they were and how they HAD to be something more than Grape Jelly and Chili sauce.
Well ... the year came where she tired of making the same old thing and when the list went up for everyone to write down what appetizer they were bringing - my heart sank. But ... she said "why don't you make them" ... and I thought ... "yeah...sure...why not?" ... so I set out to do it!
I spared no expense - meat from the BUTCHER - not just the "meat department" ... SMUCKERS Grape Jelly ... not just "any" Grape Jelly ... HEINZ Chili Sauce - not the "store brand" Chili Sauce. And I carefully crafted each little meatball .. into perfectly round little spheres.
I cooked them the night before - so as to just "heat them up" the day of our party ... and under my watchful and I must say - amazed - eyes - they transformed into the very meatballs I had craved oh so many years! VICTORY!!! I made them ... SUCCESS!!!
or so I thought ...
I awoke during the night to a most foul odor ... what could that be I wondered as I stirred from the bed and headed upstairs?

there - on the stove - the MEATBALLS!!! I had fallen asleep during the last cooking period (low and slow) and they had slowly cooked into one molten mass in the pan - still distinguishable as meatballs ... yes ... but stuck forever in the circular shape and charred brown
I took the pan to work - just to show that I HAD made them - and the first co-worker I met had the GREAT idea of pulling a joke on our newest employee. She picked through and put out some that weren't as badly burnt and then we all watched and waited as he politely took two - chocked both down - and lamely said "good meatballs Jen" ...
Well - a good sting in our office does not go without payback. SO ... the next week as we dined on burgers for my birthday at the local joint across the street - imagine my surprise when my basket was brought out - and instead of a cheese burger with everything - there was the pile of the rest of my meatballs from the Friday before's X-Mas party!!!
Apparently the look on my face was hilarious!
So Deevs - just know - that those meatballs will be perfect - and even if they aren't - they are a classic holiday dish that can be fun even when they're bad!
