Norton's character was an extremely smart person with nor morals or ethics. He and the girl got into the whole sex thing with the priest and at some point Norton kills the priest in a rage. He realizes he is screwed and so 'adopts' the imbecile persona and the whole multiple personality thing to avoid the jail time he knows would otherwise be inevitable.
