Only having jumped into the series in season 5, I can't speak intelligently as to his overall character arc.

And after reading the (now proven false) rumors last year that the show was going to shed its conservative leanings and make Jack all remorseful and apologetic for his methods, I am enjoying this season immensely.
I do enjoy the dynamic of the lady FBI agent playing his conscience, or maybe what his conscience would have naively been before his experiences taught him how the world really works.
