I read these as they came out beginning in 1971 and through about the first 100 books. It was a fun read and had some great humor that the movie really missed.
One thing I learned years later was that Murphy wrote the first half of each book and handed it off to Sapir to finish. They did not work together at all.
It would have been difficult to film most of what was in the books without using slo-mo like Kung Fu.
