Watching 'The Taste' and my wife and I have a question. Is there a distinction between calling someone a 'chef' and a 'cook'?

To me, it sounds like a Chef prepares and designs a meal a Cook sounds like they warm things up.
I've noticed that on Chopped, they always say 'thank you, chef' and never 'cook'.
But when these judges are talking I each other they throw both terms around.
Just wondered if anyone in the know had some input. I've never remotely worked in a kitchen.
