Actually, the best way for humans to eat is how they train diabetics to eat, smaller meals--6 x per day.

I'm still bad at forgetting to eat at the right times and I've been on insulin for over a year. The endocrinologist told me that in a perfect world we'd even wake up halfway through the night to eat something. Six small meals of 200-300 calories each, eaten 4 hours apart is perfect for the human metabolism. Since most folks aren't going to set the alarm for 4am to eat, it's ok to make your evening meal more like 400-500 calories, but you're still supposed to have a "small" meal 4 hours later, right before bedtime. Typically, I'll have something like lime sherbet, some cheese and a couple of triscuits. If I don't, I'll wake up going into a sugar crash in the mornings.
