Benoit's career is much like Kane's imo. Neither was ever *the guy* for an organization that was healthy, however both had moments at the top but

were always going to be short-term guys until the next 'real' star would be ready to take over.

WCW in 1999/2000 didn't have a choice. All their big names were taking dumps on the product or were injured and Benoit/Eddie/Malenko were dependable and had some legitimate hardcore credibility with rabid fans.

But they didn't think they had a legitimate shot and when someone asked if anyone wanted out, they said sure and were hired within days by WWE and immediately turned into mid-carder to upper-mid-carders (much like at the time Angle/Jericho/Tazz).

Guys who could show upward mobility but weren't guaranteed it if they didn't adapt to WWE style.
