Nonsense. I lived an hour away from Portland when I was dating online. You live that close to Eugene.

Its not about the volume anyway. Its about setting yourself apart from the other 10 guys that are messaging them too. Unique, funny, win the day. I made the most outrageous profiles you can possibly imagine. The more outragious they were the better I did. That gets you in the front door. Then the next step is the first date. Work on getting in the front door. Pick women in Portland. Just practice messaging them first. I got to the point where I would message back and forth for a week or two before even asking for their number. I simply didnt waste my time getting a number until I was sure there was interest on both sides.
You should start practicing messaging only with Portland ladies. Big pool of ladies and you can start to see what works for you and what doesn't.
You are right about confidence too. If you don't have it they can tell right away.
