While not near the same thing, we had to have the same conversation when Ozzie went blind.

The vet told us then we could spend $10k and probably restore some of his sight...only for him to get cataracts within about 2 years and end up, ya know, going blind.

If spending the money would guarantee quality of life for several more years...you have to think about it. But when even the vet is telling you it's fishing, you're definitely doing the right thing...as sucky as it is.
