The fear used to be that the Post Office would read your mail. Didn't happen. Or that the FBI would listen in on your phone calls. Didn't happen.

Why? Because rules were in place to prevent it.
Email is the new mail and cell phones are the new phone lines. Put time/place/method restrictions on how the data can be used and we're exactly as safe in our privacy as we were before the internet and cell phones.
