their self-interest which a gay man voting for gay marriage could be seen as. I think it's easier to dismiss that because we view that vote as "right". Positive for human rights, etc. On the other hand, since it's consistent with their public position, a voter has all the knowledge they need on that persons position, whereas that's not the case for the hypocritical politician.
