Yeah, I don't see the argument for the Soviet Union providing stability. So many proxy conflicts...

I agree with Max - the common link between the Ukraine, Thailand*, the Arab spring is a conflict between populists/democrats on one side and entrenched interests/oligarchs on the other.
*Thailand's a little different, because it's populist + one oligarch on one side and entrenched interests on the other
