I can't imagine anyone trying this in a collectibles shop where the people behind the counter are generally quite knowledgeable on the subject matter.

A clothing store, sure. The clerks are part-time help that know nothing and just want the pay check. But if you're working in a comic shop, you know if that Giant Size X-Men #1 is $5 or $500.
