This reminds me of what happened when I called to cancel my subscription to the Washington Post a few weeks ago (Hi Kim....)

my main reasons for doing so were 1) it's getting kind of expensive and 2) I don't have a lot of time to read it anymore. I've been reluctant to cancel, but especially since we're really trying to trim expenses, it was time to bit the bullet.

I told the person who I talked to on the phone #2. She said, pretty much verbatim, "We can't afford to lose another subscriber right now" and, after some back and forth, she gave me 75% off the subscription rate...meaning that the amount I had already paid in January will cover me through the rest of 2014.

What I took away from this was that, for advertising purposes, I suppose, their subscriber count is more important that the income brought in by home subscriptions.

I feel a lot better about not having to cancel....I took it hard when the newspaper I grew up with (Rocky Mountain News) went under a few years ago.
