The advertising rates at my former employer are the reason that paper is in the condition it's in now.

Raise advertising rates
Lose customers who can advertise elsewhere
Panic because ads aren't coming in
Raise advertising and subscription rates
Lose subscribers (and more advertisers)
Panic
etc.
When my father died, we didn't put an obituary in the local paper because, in my mom's words, "Your father would kill me if I spent $1-2k on an *obituary*." Wasn't a particularly long one, either. Instead, she advertised in the paper from the area he grew up in, for a small fraction of the cost.
You can advertise a house on Craigslist. You can put an obit on a free or low cost site. Continuing to raise rates, in my paper's case, made no sense.
