They had a fine young LT they could have franchised. There was no reason for them to let him go.
Rather than keep him, they brought in an older guy who they knew would be cheaper.
The older guy has been fighting health issues for several seasons now, averaging about 600 snaps a year. Most offensive linemen are in the 800+ range.
They formed the contract a certain way to get closer to the salary cap because they have roughly $60 million in space.
In failing the physical, the team now needs a LT for no good reason, has to overpay more free agents and is going to get kicked around by the media so much that Jimmy Haslem should own them.
