Tracking something through the woods is much different than trying to determine which fork a car took.

I have a different read on him than you have. I think he would very much wallow in self pity if he blames himself for their trouble. I think he would try and get past it pretty quickly, which I'm not so sure he did. I think the exhaustion of having been running all night was a factor as well. Though how he ran all night without running into any walkers (apparently) is rather curious.
