The weakness of the writing, the manner in which it is cowardly, is that the writer hides behind dark actions in lieu of advancing the story. The last comic I read was the one where a bunch of hillbillies tried to rape a boy. Shock value is what a person hides behind when they have no ideas to espouse instead.
In a horror movie, it's killing the pet dog/cat for no reason. In wrestling, it's saying the name of the town in order to get a cheap pop. It's lazy, and it's weak.
