And many of the cruelest characters - Tywin, Varys, Cersei, the Hound, and even Joffrey - have their sympathetic sides and motivations.
Of course others like Littlefinger and Gregor Clegane are purely monsters.

It may be quibbling, but I'd call them empathetic characters, not sympathetic
