"Series finales are about growth" - and that's exactly what this one was about. -spoils-

HAD Ted and Robin ended up together, they would've ended up exactly like Robin and Barney ended up - resentful of each other and divorced. Ted would've been resentful of Robin for focusing on her career (which is exactly what she said she wanted) and Robin would've resented Ted for still trying to change her mind about having kids (which is exactly what he said he wanted). It would've been a classic case of "we'll get married and she'll/he'll change his mind about (whatever)." I think we've all known people where that was the case. Or perhaps even been those people.
So Ted and Robin couldn't have ended up together successfully until both characters exhibited the (series finale)character growth necessary.
