That first sentence should be clarified... -spoiler-

Had Ted and Robin ended up together *AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SHOW IN THEIR 20's*, they would've ended up exactly like Robin and Barney ended up - resentful of each other and divorced
In fact, Robin/Barney is essentially the writers saying "See, THIS is what would've happened."
