Robin and Barney were a terrible couple too. It wasn't because of job or whatnot; it was that they were not a good couple.
This entire show tried to be Friends for the new millenium but didn't have the ability to write Ross/Rachel correctly and already had the married couple so they had to throw two mis-matched characters into a relationship that was off-key from the start.
Then they finally get around to writing the actual story key element and all the shoe-horned / red herrings bit them in the ass.
Ross and Rachel worked at the end becuase they had a decade of competent writing / successful false starts (the baby was that show's 2nd best year)...that made us feel these guys should end up together.
No one was clamoring for Robin/Ted again. No one. That it was tacked onto an ending where the mom dies within seconds for the audience...awful ending to an okay finale to that point.
