I don't think how great he was with their mother was meant to be undermined by his going after Robin. I think the mother was the love of his life. But it's six years later and he's ready to get out there again and apparently Robin has been around more (the kids refer to how much they love her and how she's been over to dinner a bunch) and he's feeling something for Robin again. He's explaining this to the kids because he wants them to know he isn't forgetting their mother or jumping into something.
